The debut album from Chicago's Disturbed, The Sickness blends fuzzed-out basslines, growling choruses, and pristine production. They take some musical cues from acts like Korn and Slipnot, but also flex a Techno/Industrial muscle that's uncommon in today's alt-metal landscape.

Music and composition "Down With the Sickness" is a nu metal song that features an unusual "ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah" staccato noise from Disturbed's singer David Draiman at the end of the intro, which reappears before the last chorus. Draiman has stated the sound was made possible by effects on his vocal cords after receiving surgery for acid reflux, but he has dismissed the rumor the noise was.

Mixed bag of emotions on this album - been a fan ever since The Sickness and every album has been incredible. I was extremely hyped after hearing "Are You Ready" back in August, counting down the days until Evolution dropped. After my first listen, I was on the fence and had to run the album /5().

Part I explains that "despair" is the "sickness unto death." Human beings are a "synthesis" of spiritual and physical elements, and despair is a misrelation between these elements. The solution to despair is a condition in which the individual has established a relationship with the "power that established it" (in other words, with God).

Alternative metal exploded during the late '90s thanks to groundwork laid by groups like Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, and Rage Against the Machine, and as record companies scrambled to find the next Korn or Limp Bizkit, the genre became clogged with legions of similar-sounding bands, all trying to find just the right blend of low, heavy guitar riffs, rap-metal, industrial, and intense.
