Bringing critical inquiry into the study of language in society, CDS specifically focuses on exploring discourse in relation to social concerns centrally including power relations and ideologies.

Music is performed, reproduced, and heard differently today as a result of twentieth-century technology. A new consideration of these changes is a practical and cultural necessity. In Conditions of Music, Alan Durant extends Deryck Cooke's Language of Music, placing the insights of Cooke into a much wider sociological and historical framework.

A large discourse community that I personally fall under is being a musician. Every instrument has its own jargon and those who play these instruments know the lingo and different brands and what makes certain techniques better than others. Musicians use music to express themselves and challenge themselves to accomplish more.

    • Communicating music on the internet usually requires the consent of copyright owners. • Virtually no fi lm or television drama is now made without the use of music and thus the use of copyright. • Most radio and television commercials use copyright music. • Every time you listen to music on the radio you are listening to the result.

When we listen to music, we prefer a full-range sound that places the performers out into the room. We like a more "in-your-face" sound as opposed one where the soundstage sits well behind the speakers. Additionally, we like our music with a bit more "syrup" than most so our current system is slanted towards the richer and warmer side of things.
